Hawkeyes' 'Kid Captain' hails from Dubuque

The Iowa Hawkeyes football team will take to the road this weekend for the first Big 10 away game of the season, and they are doing so with some strong support from back home.

Dubuque native, Camdyn Reisner, is this week's 'Kid Captain' for the Hawkeyes.

KWWL first introduced you to Camdyn at her 11th Birthday party earlier this year. At the party, Camdyn had the chance to meet the Dubuque Mercy Hospital staff that helped save her life when she was just three-weeks-old; giving her the opportunity to be this week's 'Kid Captain.'

With a smile to capture any crowd's heart, Camdyn Reisner is ready for the Hawkeyes to take on Michigan State, the same way she takes on life.

"She fights for everything and nothing comes easily to her at all, but you can't tell Camdyn can't," said Camdyn's mother, Mandy Reisner.

Camdyn plays soccer, volleyball, and dances.

"She likes to play a lot of sports," said Mandy.

The sports are activities Mandy and her husband Eric weren't sure Camdyn was going to be able to do.

At 21-days-old, "she stopped breathing in my arms," said Mandy.

Camdyn didn't take another breath for 57 minutes. Once breathing again, she was flown to the University of Iowa's Stead Family Children's Hospital.

"They told us that, if she were to wake up, that she would be a vegetable," said Mandy.

But Camdyn fought and, 11-years later, she continues to fight through therapy and an irregular heartbeat.

"She just enjoys life, don't you? She just loves doing things, and now I am talking about you and you are embarrassed," said Mandy, as Camdyn blushed.

Camdyn's smile shined bright when she met Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz and the players earlier this year, and now she is ready for the Hawkeyes to play big.

"How many touchdowns are the Hawkeyes going to get tomorrow?"

"I think 10 or 18," laughed Camdyn. 18 might be a tall order to fill, but Camdyn will settle for a win!

"Go Hawks!" cheered Camdyn.

Camdyn and her family are hosting a party to watch the game Saturday, and will join the Hawkeyes next weekend for the homecoming game.
