Dubuque Senior claims A.Y. McDonald trophy with 28-14 win over Hempstead

Posted: Updated:

Four first-half touchdowns were more than enough for the Dubuque Senior Rams, as they beat their intracity rival Dubuque Hempstead 28-14 on Friday night.

Senior came into the game on a four game winning streak, averaging 29 points per game.

Hempstead was looking to bounce back from a blowout loss a week ago.

Senior's Sam Schnee got the Rams off to a great start, returning the opening kickoff to the 50.  After a big run from Nicholas Kubitz to get the Rams inside the 10, Schnee finished off the drive with a 4-yard score.

Hempstead answered right back with a strong drive of their own.

Reed Snitker found repeated success on the right side, eventually punching in an 8-yard run to tie the score.

But that's when Senior's Chaz Hancock took the game over.

He threw three touchdowns, including a 60-yard score to Carter Schmidt (Schmidt's second of the game) and a 29-yard strike to Schnee on fourth and eight.

The Rams now improve to 5-1, 2-0 in Class 4A, while the Mustangs fall to 2-4, 0-2.

Senior heads to Western Dubuque next week, while Hempstead will host Davenport West.
