Mercy lights the sky pink for breast cancer awareness

A Power of Pink event was held Thursday night in anticipation of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The 7th annual event was held at Mercy Medical Center's Hall-Perrine Cancer Center. Giveaways like pink fluorescent light bulbs from Alliant Energy were to help spread breast cancer awareness and early detection.

The ceremony concluded with illuminating the building pink and lighting the night sky with pink fireworks, a sight not easily missed by those that pass by.

"It brings that into the forefront of everyone's consciousness,"Vincent Reid, Hall-Perrine Cancer Center Medical Director said. "That people are for one reminded of the frequency of the disease, and the importance of making sure they get screened."

Many people that attended the event knew someone that fought cancer, is fighting cancer, or has lost their battle with cancer.

"One in eight women, that;s about 12% of women will be effected by breast cancer," Reid said.

Others are survivors themselves, like Debra Pfiffner who beat breast cancer not once but twice.

"I found a lump. The second time it was with 3D imagining. I always told myself I wasn't going to get that. Waste of time. Waste of money and then I got it and saved my life, again," Pfiffner said.

For her, seeing the night light up pink is extra special.

"Powerful. Overwhelming. We kind of lost someone recently to breast cancer, so it means a little bit more." Pfiffner said.

On Sunday, the Especially for You Race Against Breast Cancer will happen in Cedar Rapids. Over 14,000 runners and walkers are expected to turn out for the event.
