Community mourns beloved teacher

Posted: Updated:

The Waukon community is mourning the loss of a beloved teacher who died early Thursday morning.

David Schoeberlein, 59, taught social studies and coached at Waukon High School for 33 years.

Superintendent Dave Herold told KWWL it has been a difficult day for the Waukon Indian family.

“We were saddened by hearing the news of the passing of Dave Schoeberlein. Dave was a passionate teacher and coach that touched the lives of countless students, athletes, and community members. He was also a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. We will miss Dave’s wit, awesome sense of humor and his genuine sincerity for others. Our prayers go out to his wife, Janet, and children Jill and Jenna.” - Superintendent Herold

Before teaching at Waukon, Schoeberlein worked at Havelock-Plover in Havelock, Iowa, and the Danville Community School District.

Thursday, school counselors, AEA personnel and local clergy were on hand to support students and staff.

Superintendent Herold says Schoeberlein passed away from complications of back surgery.

Services will be held for Schoeberlein on October 2nd at 11 a.m. in the Waukon High School Gymnasium.
