Breast cancer survivor and her son share special moment in football stadium

PLAINFIELD (KWWL) -

A story of hope.

A mom of an Iowa football player wasn't able to attend some of his games because she was battling breast cancer.

This weekend, they will get to spend a special moment in the stadium together.

Derek Pagel is originally from Plainfield, but he went on to play for the Hawkeyes.

He eventually played for the New York Jets in 2003 and 2004. He also played for the Dallas Cowboys.

During the time that Derek was playing for the Jets, his mom was battling breast cancer.

Derek helped get a special breast cancer awareness jersey for her, but she was never able to wear it to a game because of chemo.

She says during that time she tried to stay positive, but sometimes it was hard.

"Putting one foot in front of another wasn't easy some days," Jeanette Pagel said.

She is now cancer free.

This weekend, she and her son are attending a Jets game at Metlife Stadium in New York.

She is very excited to finally get to wear her breast cancer awareness jersey to the game.

She wants it to give hope to others who may be going through the battle she did.

The game is this Sunday, October 1st.

October is breast cancer awareness month.
