Linn County Sheriff warns of scam targeting elderly

Posted: Updated:

The Linn County Sheriff's Office is issuing a warning to those who take advantage of the elderly.

Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner says they're seeing a growing list of victims in a phone scam. In the scam, someone is calling elderly people and telling them their grandson or granddaughter is in jail and they need to post bond.

Instead of coming to the jail to pay, the caller demands they buy thousands of dollars in gift cards, and drop them off at a specific location.

"When we have someone that's targeting the elderly, we're going to hunt you down. We're going to prosecute you. We're going to put you in jail," said Gardner. "And by the way, when you're there, don't bother trying to bond yourself out of jail with a Target or a Best Buy gift card. It's not gonna happen."

Gardner says it is clearly a scam, and to not fall for it.
