NORTH LIBERTY (KWWL) -

Police say an Iowa City man called 911 with a false claim during a traffic stop in attempt to differ officers.

Don Williams Jr., 24, was arrested late Tuesday night in North Liberty. According to criminal complaints, Williams Jr. had been pulled over near the intersection of Penn St. and Community Dr. That's when Williams is accused of calling 911 to report that a person was carrying a rifle and shooting people at an apartment complex in North Liberty. Police say that was a fake report.

In the criminal complaint it says Williams Jr. attempted to run away from officers and he was caught after a short chase. Police said a small bag of marijuana was found near him and when he was initially pulled, a K9 in the cop car detected it.

While police were arresting Williams Jr., his phone rang. Police said the number calling was dispatch's.

According to the Johnson County Jail, Williams Jr. is charged with making a false reporter and a non-emergency 911 call, possessing a controlled substance, interfering with official acts, driving with an invalid license, and providing false identification.
