City of Cedar Rapids talks speed cameras for work, school zones

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

New safety measures are being talked about for one eastern Iowa town.

Yesterday, the Cedar Rapids City Council talked about bringing a new type of speed camera to school and work zones.

These new speed cameras are known as DragonCams.

These cameras will capture a picture of speeders and then automatically generate a ticket that is mailed to the vehicle's registered owner.

A big reason Cedar Rapids wants to get these cameras is because they work well in areas where it is hard for an officer to make a stop in a squad car, such as school zones.

These would be speed cameras that sit in officers' cars.

They would not be fixed cameras at certain locations in Cedar Rapids.

Many of those cameras are no longer in use.
