Man gets 7 years for high school bomb threat, bank robbery

Posted: Updated:

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - An Iowa City man has been imprisoned for calling in a bomb threat to a high school and robbing a bank.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that 31-year-old Clifton Brinkmeyer was sentenced Friday to five years for threatening terrorism and two years for robbery, to be served consecutively.

Emergency dispatchers received a call Jan. 19, 2016, about an explosive at West High School in Iowa City. The building was evacuated until law enforcement determined there wasn't a threat.

A U.S. Bank branch about 5 miles (8 kilometers) east of the high school was robbed 20 minutes after the call. Authorities say Brinkmeyer used a fake plastic gun for the heist.
