Gold Wing Road Riders take seniors for a spin

Posted: Updated:

Nursing home residents at Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls were able to beat the sweltering heat Sunday afternoon with the help of the Gold Wing Road Riders.

The Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA) has been giving seniors a ride annually. The group says it's a great way to get the residents out and moving.

The local chapter from Waterloo, as well as chapters fromt Fort Dodge and Des Moines came out for the event.

Treasurer of the local GWRRA Roger Bahe says the effort is in part to take away the fear and stigma of riding a motorcycle.

"It's just something we enjoy doing, and the residents enjoy doing," said Bahe. "We had a little 101 year old riding today. And just to see that big wide smile on their face when they get off-it's a pleasure that we enjoy doing, and we just love to share that pleasure with others."

There's no age limit, either. Madge McCoskey who turned 101, even went for a spin.

"Oh that was wonderful-I like the ride," said McCoskey.

For others, the ride holds more sentiment. Belva Rhoads and her late husband used to be Road Riders themselves. She still carries her GWRRA jacket.

"My husband and I were married for over twenty years and we rode almost every week," said Rhoads. "Just like I never left it."
