Texas animals brought to Iowa after hurricane

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Several organizations have brought animals from Texas to Iowa because of Hurricane Harvey.

Earlier this month Fur Fun Rescue based out of Lisbon brought back nearly 30 dogs from a shelter that flooded.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Critter Crusaders arrived with 19 cats and 8 dogs that had been evacuated from Texas shelters.

"Made a phone call to Jan and said you know it sounds like a repeat of Katrina are you game? She said absolutely," says Glenda Fillenworth, Owner of K9 Corner & Cats Too where some of the animals are being housed.

"We took down close to $90-$100,000 worth of medications and Frontlines and everything donated by local veterinarians across Cedar Rapids and Iowa City as well," says Jan Erceg, Critter Crusaders of Cedar Rapids Medical Coordinator.

Erceg says several organizations have worked together to bring animals to Iowa including Dogs Forever and Last Hope Animal Rescue.

Many of the animals are receiving medical care before they can be put up for adoption.
"Everyone is pitching in and I could not be more proud to be working with these people, it's an amazing experience," she says.

While dozens of animals from Texas have been brought to Iowa we are told local animals come first so shelters and rescues are only taking in the numbers they can handle.

If you are looking to eventually adopt one of the animals we are told the best thing to do is pay attention to pet finder websites and the Facebook pages of local organizations who have taken them in.
