Cedar Falls teacher honored with Tools for Schools award

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

An eastern Iowa teacher will be revamping her classroom after being honored for her outstanding work.

Andrea Hutchison is a special education teacher at Orchard Hill Elementary in Cedar Falls, and was awarded $1,000 today as a Cedar Valley Tools for Schools recipient.

Hutchison says she will use the money to buy sensory items, like body socks or weighted blankets. These will help her kids develop their social and behavioral skills.

"I think that all kids need a strong social emotional component to their education. I can teach them reading, writing and math. But the social skills are so much more important," said Hutchison. "That's what's going to carry them through. Getting a long with others. Knowing how to manage their own feelings."

The Cedar Valley Tools for Schools program is a partnership between KWWL, The University of Iowa Community Credit Union and Kimball and Beecher. A new area teacher will be awarded with $1,000 dollars each month through the program.
