UPDATE: The Iowa State Patrol says dense fog played a critical role in a deadly crash near Vinton Tuesday morning.

The crash happened on Highway 150 near the intersection with 24th Ave.

Dense fog across Eastern Iowa made for rough conditions on the roads Tuesday morning. According to Iowa State Patrol, the fog played a contributing role in the accident.

Both a garbage truck and a semi truck were involved in the crash. According to state patrol, Dennis Umbdenstock, 65, was driving a garbage truck when he pulled out in front of a semi-truck on the curve along the highway. Umbdenstock died at the scene. The semi-truck was driven by Christopher Stanbrough, 31, he was uninjured in the accident. There were two people inside the semi truck who were not injured.

There were two passengers in the garbage truck. The Benton County Sheriff's officer says Wesley Venenga, 17, and Jonathan Poorman, 22, were thrown from the garbage truck because of the impact of the crash. Venenga was taken to St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids, and Poorman was taken to Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton. Their condition is still not known at the time.

Both the Iowa state patrol along with the Benton county sheriff's office responded to the area along Highway 150. The area was blocked off, while traffic was redirected for hours.

Crews worked into the afternoon to tow away both vehicles. The Linn County hazmat team also worked to clean up diesel fuel that spilled onto the highway.
