University Avenue traffic changes cause confusion

Posted: Updated:

A construction project on a busy road in eastern Iowa is once again looking different tonight. University Avenue in Cedar Falls has new roundabouts that drivers are now getting accustomed to.

The most recent changes have some drivers confused. Right now construction crews are working to fix the curb near Carlos O'Kelly's, which should make it easier to turn toward University Avenue. The northbound lane of Valley Park Drive is closed and it's causing some confusion. Some drivers are even driving the opposite way down a one way street. The new construction is frustrating some drivers.

"It's been kind of a mess...I really don't appreciate it, I think it's worse now then it's ever been," said James Duffy, New Hampton. "It's a chore for us to get through there."

Fixing the curb should only take a few days. Some drivers are thankful for the changes being made to the road, even though construction has been challenging.

"I think it's way better then it was before," said Ryan Folkerts. Dike. "I wasn't a fan of the roundabouts, but it sure is a whole lot nicer getting around now."

One of the biggest problems for drivers right now is getting from College Square back onto University Avenue while crews are working on the curb. For some the traffic patterns are hard to get used to, even if it's just for a few days.

"It's kind of a disaster, I just follow the car in front of me and hope he knows where he is headed," said Duffy.

Most drivers are getting the concept of using Boulder Drive or the Holiday Road roundabouts to get back onto University, while others find themselves going the wrong way. The City of Cedar Falls says phase one of the project is now complete and phase two of the project should be finished this year.
