No arrests yet in deadly Cedar Rapids shooting

Posted: Updated:

One person is dead after a shooting in Cedar Rapids last night. Family and friends confirm Kenneth Everett was killed after he was shot in the 300 block of 17th Street South East.

Cedar Rapids police say they were called to a home for a reported shooting a little after 8:20 p.m.  Family tells KWWL Everett's girlfriend, Gabriel Thomas was also hurt in the shooting.

Family members say they have no idea why someone would shoot Everett and his girlfriend. Many people in the area say they're concerned about their own families and neighbors.

"This is the second time in a week we've had shots fired in this's getting just ridiculous," said Carmen Maiese, Cedar Rapids.

Neighbors say they are frustrated and frightened. The family that lives next door to the house where the shooting happened says they heard someone banging on their windows and shortly after they heard gun shots. Neighbors say they heard at least a dozen shots.

"It's been scary, I mean this is our fifth shooting in four years just on our block alone," said Maiese. "Families alone in this area are getting tired of it, no body is wanting to do anything to stop them from coming to town and causing their problems."

One family's home is just feet from where the shots rang out.

"They've got three children and that happened right next door to their house, so it's scary for everyone," said Maiese.

Neighbors are hoping the violence surrounding the home will stop.

"It's disgusting, I mean I am glad that the activity will stop at this house for now, but it's heartbreaking...there were children inside this place as well so it's really scary," said Maiese.

Family says Thomas is stable tonight. Cedar Rapids Police say the area has been opened, but the investigation is still going. Police say they are looking for the shooter and they don't think the shooting was random.
