Wapsie Valley edges East Buchanan 14-13 in overtime thriller

Posted: Updated:

Wapsie Valley got the job done, stopping an East Buchanan 2-point conversion attempt to walk-off the field with a 14-13 overtime win.

The final play ended a hard-nosed defensive battle between two teams determined to stay in the district title hunt. The Warriors overcame a pair of interceptions and a lost fumble as East Buc won the turnover battle 3-0.

The Buccaneers took a first half lead on a 49 yard bomb from Spencer Cook to Jake Ohl. Ohl reached over a defender, catching the ball in front of his opponents face mask to make a spectacular grab on the touchdown. That would be the only score of the first half.

Wapsie Valley responded in the third quarter on a long, time consuming drive that ended in a Tanner Sauerbrei two-yard sneak for a touchdown and a tie ballgame. It eventually sent the contest to overtime.

The Warriors used just two plays to score. Jake Kuhlmann plowed in on a two yard run for a 14-7 lead.

East Buc pulled within one as Cook scrambled for a three yard score on fourth down, but his two point conversion attempt sailed over the receiver as the Buccaneers suffered their first loss of the season, while Wapsie Valley moved to 4-0.
