The name of a woman who was killed while protesting against a white nationalist demonstration has been painted on a monument to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in Roanoke, Virginia.

NBC affiliate WSLS 10 reported Thursday that the words "Rest in Power Heather Heyer" were found on the structure.

Heyer was killed last month when a car plowed into a group of people protesting against the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. White nationalists had been rallying in support of a Lee statue in Charlottesville that officials plan to remove.

Roanoke police spokesman Scott Leamon said the department is investigating. He said that a WSLS TV crew discovered the writing shortly before 5 a.m. Leamon said police will see if any surveillance cameras captured footage of the vandalism.
