Stanley starting to shine in Iowa offense

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Nate Stanley grew up on Saturday. Minus a couple of overthrows, the sophomore quarterback looked sharp against Iowa State throwing for five touchdowns in the Cy-Hawk win.

"Saturday was just an example of great team football,” said Stanley, “The week before the defense helped us out a lot. This time we came out and scored a lot when we needed to. They got stops when they needed to. Overall I think it shows great team football."

The decision making against Iowa State stood in stark contrast to his week one performance. Stanley saw a lot of positives throwing three touchdowns against Wyoming, but he also turned the ball over three times.

"He's grown a lot,” said senior lineman Boone Myers, “He's got a little more something to him. He's settling in. He's really relaxed in there, and he's way more confident."

"Composed. I think that's the perfect way to put it,” agreed senior receiver Matt Vandeberg, “He's not too high, not to low, always ready to go to work and see what he can do."

Confidence has come with success. Stanley is the only quarterback under Kirk Ferentz to throw for eight touchdowns in the first two games of his career.

That's a trend the Hawkeyes would like to see continue.

"He's getting better,” said senior running back Akrum Wadley, “and that's what coach Brian and all the other coaches talk about, getting better by the day."
