Report ranks UNI among top public universities in Midwest

The University of Northern Iowa is among elite company, according to a new report ranking the country's universities.

According to the U.S. News & World Report's "Best Colleges 2018" guidebook, UNI ranked No. 2 in the "Best Regional Universities (Midwest)" category among public universities. Northern Iowa ranked No. 25 overall on the list of combined public and private schools in the region.

Other Iowa schools appearing in the top 50 for Regional Universities in the Midwest include private institutions Drake University in Des Moines (No. 3 overall), St. Ambrose University in Davenport (tie for No. 26 overall). The Regional Universities Midwest rankings include 173 schools in total.

Northern Iowa president Mark Nook described the university's standing on the list as a "tremendous honor."

"It is recognition of the commitment by our faculty and staff to ensure that every student reaches their educational, professional and personal life goals. Thanks to the hard work of our students, faculty and staff, UNI consistently outperforms expected outcomes," said Nook.

The University of Iowa and Iowa State University are ranked on a separate National Universities list in the guidebook, with UI ranked No. 78 and ISU coming in at No. 115. A total of 311 schools appear on the National Universities list.

Ranking criteria for the report includes peer assessment, academic reputation, retention, faculty resources, student selectivity, graduation-rate performance and alumni giving rate, according to the UNI Office of University Relations.
