DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

A long awaited road project in eastern Iowa is making significant progress.

The Southwest Arterial road project has been underway for about one year. When it's finished, the new four lane, six mile highway will cut traffic in Dubuque neighborhoods, connecting the city's west-end to the south-end.

"It will go from U.S. Highway 20 down to U.S. Highway 151," said Assistant City Engineer Bob Schisel.

According to project managers, it has been on the city's wish list for 30 years.

Two lanes of the project are expected to be complete in 2019.

The budget is about $150 million dollars. Another $17 million is needed to complete the project.
