Wahawks look to next man in

Varsity experience is a luxury the Waterloo West football team will have precious little of to start the 2017 season.

Head coach Lonnie Moore has found himself in a position where he has to replace his top five scorers from a season ago. Those five include his son, all-state quarterback Devon Moore, who has moved on to Iowa State.

With so many starting spots up for grabs on both sides of the ball, Coach Moore says intensity in practice has ramped up a bit.

“Guys are competing against each other because they all want to play,” said Moore, “So, they're all trying to show me and the coaches that they should be the one out there, so that's probably the best part of it.”

Senior Cadd Dodd will get the task of taking over the Wahawks' offense this season. He said having the opportunity to work with Devon Moore over the years has paid dividends as he takes over the starting job, and while Dodd admits there will be growing pains, he doesn't expect them to last long.

“It will be rough the first game, but I feel like when we get in the flow of things and get our groove back, we'll be straight,” said the first year starter, “We're a good team all around. We proved that over the summer during 7 on 7's. So, I feel like we'll be pretty good.”

West opens the season with a road trip to Dubuque Senior on Friday.
