Police investigating racist graffiti found in U of I residence halls

University of Iowa Police are investigating racist graffiti that was found in two residence halls over the weekend.

On Sunday, the University of Iowa Housing and Dining staff reported racist graffiti in Catlett Hall and Hillcrest Hall. Students living in these locations were sent emails about the graffiti the following day.

Dear Hillcrest Hall community,

On Sunday, August 19, University of Iowa Housing & Dining staff reported an incident of racist graffiti in the residence hall. The UI Police Department was notified and an investigation is underway.

If anyone has any information relating to this incident, please contact the UI Police Department at (319) 335-5022. If the individual(s) responsible are identified, appropriate actions will be taken.

Hate speech does not reflect the values of our institution and will not be tolerated. We are a caring community that values compassion, inclusion, respect, and dignity. As we respond to this despicable and cowardly act, we recognize that recent national events may motivate individuals to attempt to undermine our commitment to fostering an inclusive community. We refuse to expand their platform.

An exact email was also sent to students in Catlett Hall. 

KWWL spoke with University of Iowa students today who are shocked about the incident. 

"It kind of gets a little scary when it gets close to your home," says Mcintosh Waylee.

The University says it cannot share pictures of the graffiti or explain exactly what it said because it's a part of the investigation.
