Dike-New Hartford passed the test, holding off Independence 40-27 to open their 2017 campaign. The game was the first for the Wolverines since the graduation of Iowa's all-time leading rusher Trent Johnson.

D-NH quarterback Cade Fuller rushed for four touchdowns in the ballgame in which the Wolverines never trailed.

Dike-New Hartford jumped out to a 21-0 lead after a 50 yard interception return for touchdown by sophomore Noah Epley. Independence quickly responded with a 20 yard scoring scamper by Noah Gall, while Fuller went 28 yards for his third score in an offensive flurry that saw D-NH get out to a 27-8 lead.

The Mustangs pulled within seven at the half after Gall's second touchdown and a seven yard scoring reception by Cyrus Butter. D-NH, however, put the game away with second half scoring runs from Fuller and Ryan Moore.
