Waterloo firefighters to hold annual Fill the Boot drive for MDA

Posted: Updated:

Have a few dollars on hand the next couple of days and help Fill the Boot.  The Waterloo Fire Department is showing its support for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, participating in the annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign, starting August 18.

In 2016, they raised $21,000, thanks to the generosity of the Waterloo community. They hope to surpass that in 2017.  You can help them reach their goal by dropping a donation into their boots when you are out and about.

For more than 60 years, Fill the Boot has helped raise the funds vital to helping the kids and adults with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle-debilitating diseases, who rely on the many services the MDA provides.  Funds locally go towards places like the MDA Care Center at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, and also help send more than 70 local kids to “the best week of the year” at MDA summer camp at Camp Courageous in Monticello, IA – all at no cost to their families.

“The dedication of these firefighters to MDA’s mission is unwavering, spending countless hours both with Fill the Boot and MDA Summer Camp to care for the kids and adults in the Waterloo area. We know that their devotion to our families will make this year’s drive a success,” said Jillian Harper, Executive Director of the MDA Cedar Rapids office.

The firefighters from Waterloo Local 66 will be hitting the streets with boots in hand starting on August 18th at 3pm at Franklin/E. 3rd, La Porte/San Marnan, Kimball/Ridgeway, Ansborough/Downing, 4th/Lafayette St.

Also happening during the month of August, the MDA pinup program at 495 Casey's General Store locations in Iowa.  Learn more about the pinup program here.
