Downtown Waterloo construction gains momentum

Posted: Updated:

A sea of orange continues to plague on one eastern Iowa town, as road construction projects keep popping up.

Right now, downtown Waterloo has a few main construction projects going on, one being the Fourth Street pedestrian bridge and another being the Highway 63 reconstruction project. Both projects should be completed with in the next few months.

The Iowa DOT says each state highway gets re-done every 30 to 40 years and this year, it's Highway 63's turn. For the last couple of months downtown Waterloo has been flooded with construction and the Iowa DOT says this is just the beginning.

"There's gonna be a lot of construction going on in this area for some time," said Pete Hjelmstad, Iowa DOT.

Right now the Iowa DOT is working on the Highway 63 reconstruction project. Adding new concrete to the road and also installing a new storm sewer, water main, side walks and light posts.

"Highway 63 will be will be brand new concrete between Jefferson and Franklin for the south bound lanes this year and next year we will be doing the north bound lanes," said Hjelmstad. "We knew that it needed to be reconstructed, it was time, the highway came to the point where it needed to be reconstructed."

The Highway 63 project is not the only construction people in downtown Waterloo are seeing. The Fourth Street bridge is also under construction, but the City of Waterloo and the DOT say both those projects are right on schedule.

"The majority of the concrete is down on the road way so they are making good progress and things are progressing nicely," said Hjelmstad.

The city says Fourth Street is set to reopen to vehicle traffic in September, whereas Highway 63 should reopen sometime in November.

"We know that construction does make things a little more difficult to get around especially if this is where you have to go to work or where you live and we definitely appreciate people's patience," said Hjelmstad.

The Iowa DOT says they will be starting a new project this Monday, which will close off a part of Franklin Street. The DOT is asking if you don't need to travel in these areas, find a different route.
