Recipient of good will during Bosnian War gives back decades later

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A 29-year-old refugee of the Bosnian genocide is giving back decades later, with a gift similar to one she was given during the war.

Minela Obic, now a patient account analyst at Covenant Clinic in Waterloo, was a child in Bosnia when she received a shoebox filled with clothes, hygiene products, and toys.

"Still today when I think about it, I get the same feeling when I got a box," Obic says.

After immigrating to the United States in 2000 with her family, she received a 2nd box.

Now Obic is going above and beyond, by donating shoeboxes through the Waterloo Downtown Rotary Club's Nicaragua Shoebox Project.

So far this year, she's donated four boxes, making for 10 in the last two years.

Obic makes sure to put a card with her name in the boxes; she hopes that someday one of these children will reach out to her.
