Maquoketa Fareway store home to top two grocery baggers in state

When it comes to getting your groceries into grocery bags fast, there are none faster than Trevor Deforest and Kevin Simmons.

The two baggers, who have a combined nearly 40 years of experience at the store, finished first and second respectively at the Iowa State Fair's competition.

The two spent many hours in the lead-up to the competition training, pushing each other to be better.

"I didn't hold back anything. That's what made us better at the competition at state, because we both knew we were bringing it, and we weren't going to let up for the other one," said Simmons, who finished just behind his coworker Deforest.

The contest is judged on four categories: technique, attitude, style and weight distribution.

"Building boxes on the sides and filling in the sacks, making sure no glass is touching the edges, making sure cans aren't on top of other cans... stuff like that," Deforest said.

But more than just getting the groceries in the bag, the men say they keep getting better to better help the customers.

"Wanting to help the customers come through here. Our number one thing is customer service for Fareway, and definitely that's our main attitude that we take care of that customer," Deforest said.

The win is even sweeter for Deforest, who came up just short at last year's competition.

"I competed last year and got second place, so definitely wanted to improve on that," he said.

Simmons hopes he can pull the same feat and create a dynasty in Maquoketa.

"Yeah, I'll be back next year. I'll definitely be back next year," he said.

Deforest will now head to Las Vegas in February to compete at the national level.
