Luther starts practicing on newly installed blue turf

Posted: Updated:

Luther College's football team was cleared to get on their brand new blue turf Monday afternoon--they immediately held a practice on it.

Tuesday brought their first padded practice on the new surface.

Pretty easy to see: they're excited about it.

"We had kids running out like it was their first time seeing a turf field or something," said Head Football Coach Aaron Hafner.

Tuesday's practice on the new turf featured the offense in white jerseys and blue shorts, while the defense rocked blue jerseys, blue shorts and blue helmets.

The all blue is something they plan on using this season, school officials said.

They're hoping the new look turf will give them a bit of a home field advantage.

But it's also the first time Luther will have a turf field at all--they were last college in their conference to make the switch.

Hafner says that switch will pay off just as much or even more than the color switch.

"To come out here everyday, practice on a safe environment...hopefully that gives us the advantage to stay healthy throughout the season," he said.

Senior quarterback Brady Letney is among those very excited about the new turf.

He says he wishes he had more than a year with it, but is grateful the school made the effort to get it.

"Hey, it's a good way to go out. It would've been nice to have it all four years, but this awesome. I'm so grateful, so thankful for all of our coaches and everything they've done to get this going," Letney said.

The $1.7 million project was paid for completely with donations.

They'll debut the new field on September 9, when they take on rival St. Olaf.  They'll also dedicate the field that day in a pregame ceremony.
