Entries, prizes coming in for officer's benefit 5K Thursday night

Posted: Updated:

The response has been overwhelming, but, there's still time to help an Officer in Need of Assistance this Thursday night, August 17, at 6:30 p.m.

Dave Lipinski of Trekman Racing  http://www.trekmanracing.com/ reports The Officer in Need of Assistance benefit 5K fundraiser Thursday night, already has 441 entries as of Tuesday night.

The event will be held at Gateway Park, located at Lincoln and North Main Streets in Cedar Falls, just across the river from the downtown Parkade.

Registrations are still being accepted online at: https://www.athlinks.com/event/210111

The special benefit run/walk is for longtime Cedar Falls Police Reserve Officer, Scott Sterrett, whom is battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

So far, ahead of the actual event, more than $10,000 has been raised to help Scott in his fight against the illness.

In addition, the community has really stepped up to help with this 6:30 p.m. event at Gateway Park in Cedar Falls.

More than 100 prizes have been donated. That's a prize total of some $2,000 up for grabs for participants.

Among the prizes, a football signed by the entire Iowa State football team, which will be auctioned off after completion of the run/walk.

There will also be a raffle. Raffle tickets will go on sale at 4:30 Thursday night at Gateway Park.

The night of the event, anyone can make a cash donation at the Red Tent, which will be set up in Gateway Park.

More on Scott from KWWL Reporter, Taylor Bailey's earlier story.

Officer Scott Sterrett has been working for the Cedar Falls Police Department for more than 10 years, and recently he was diagnosed with stage-four pancreatic cancer.

The community and the Cedar Falls Police Department have been behind Sterrett since he was diagnosed earlier this year. From bake sales to 5K's the community is standing with Sterrett.

Sterrett has been a reserve officer for twelve years, since being diagnosed Sterrett says he hasn't been able to work.

"Unfortunately I haven't been able to work any since my surgery and my cancer so it's been kind of tough not being able to be down there see the people working," Sterrett, Cedar Falls.

Sterrett says the support he is getting from the Cedar Falls Police Department and the whole community is something he never expected.

"I am used to doing stuff on my own and doing things for myself so it's pretty amazing how all the people come out and help support," said Sterrett. "All your friends, family and everyone comes out and does things for you."

Sterrett was only diagnosed a few months ago.

"I started having some stomach pain and went to the emergency room here a couple of times and they ended up doing a CT scan and they found a spot on my pancreas and that's when they sent me to go up to Mayo Clinics," Sterrett. "It just kind of all of a sudden showed up with in a week's time without not really having any symptoms."

Sterrett, 48-years-old, is and an avid runner. He's already done 23 marathons, including the Boston Marathon. Now he says, cancer is taking him away from the things he loves.

"I am a marathon runner and it's tough not being able to get out there and run and do the things I normally do, but you know hopefully some day I will be able to get back to those things," said Sterrett.

Sterrett is hopeful with the support of the community and family he will win this fight.

"Hopefully the treatments are doing what they hope they do," said Sterrett. "If they are going well then hopefully I can eventually have some surgery and remove the tumor and then go from there."

Sterrett tells me he goes back to Mayo in a few weeks to see if the treatments are working.

The police department is planning a special 5K for him that starts at Gateway Park in Cedar Falls. The 5K will be Thursday August 17th at 6:30 p.m.

It's called the Officer Needs Assistance 5K. There will be a barbeque after the run.  All runners and walkers are invited to participate, but please register ahead of time.

The Cedar Falls Police Department asks that anyone who is interested please pre-register, so they know how much food will be needed.

If you would like to help out, but don't want to run, you can just come out for the food afterward.

Again, you can register for the 5K,  here: https://www.athlinks.com/event/210111

If you would like to donate, click here. If you would like to come out just for the food, you can message the Cedar Falls Police Operations Facebook page

The Cedar Falls Police Department also thanks Dave Lipinski at Trekman racing for his donation and time spent organizing this event. They also thank Here's What's Poppin. They will be hand-selling popcorn at the 5K. All the proceeds will be donated to Scott.

If you are interested in being a food vendor, or want to help out in any other way, you can contact Officer Zolondek at the Cedar Falls Police Department.

Scott Sterrett is one of the longest serving reserve officers at Cedar Falls.
