Dozens shave their heads in support for firefighter with cancer

LANSING (KWWL) -

An eastern Iowa fire department is rallying behind one of their own after he was diagnosed with cancer in May.

More than 15 Lansing firefighters shaved their heads this weekend to show support for Bill Bartels, a lifelong member of the Lansing Fire Department.

Firefighters and members of the community gave a donation to help Bartels and also shaved their heads for the Bald for Bill Fundraiser. Organizers do not have a grand total of the amount of money donated, but they will be presenting the family with a check tonight. Organizers say one musician was able to raise $600 on his own to help support Bartels.

Twenty-five people from around the area shaved their heads to show love and support for Bartels and it's something that means the world to him and his family.

Sue Bartels', Bill's wife, says she and Bill were not able to make it to Bald for Bill this weekend since Bill was in the hospital for his fifth round of treatment.

Sue says the community's support is overwhelming. "It shows us how a small town pulls together when someone is in need of support. We couldn't be prouder to live in Lansing."
