WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A Waterloo native, who's now an assistant professor in Michigan, has received a national honor.

Elizabeth Stoycheff wrote, 'Under Surveillance: Examining Facebook’s Spiral of Silence Effects in the Wake of NSA Internet Monitoring.'

That article was named the best one published last year in Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly.

An award is being given to her this month at the annual Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conference in Chicago.

Stoycheff graduated from Waterloo West in 2004 before going on to the University of Iowa and Ohio State University.

She's now the Department of Communication Assistant Professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.

She teaches reporting and feature writing.
