IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

An Iowa mom accused of trying to flush her newborn down the toilet and leaving him in a trash can has had an Attempted Murder charge dropped after a plea deal.

Ashley Hautzenrader gave birth inside a University of Iowa Hospital bathroom last May.

She originally plead not guilty to Attempted Murder and Child Endangerment but had a plea hearing today where she plead guilty to Child Endangerment and Abandonment of a Dependent Person.

In return for the guilty pleas, the state dropped the Attempted Murder charge.

The baby was found alive by University of Iowa Hospital staff shortly after it was abandoned in the trash.

Hautzenrader was emotional as she left the courtroom today.

She faces up to 12 years behind bars, a sentencing date has not yet been set.

There will no longer be a trial, it was originally scheduled to start next week.
