Stylist gives teen in need life-altering haircut

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

An area hairdresser is gaining international attention for going above and beyond to help a teen in need.

A 16-year-old girl, who says she wishes to stay anonymous, went into Capri Waterloo earlier this week with her hair matted and in knots, claiming she was too depressed to get out of bed to brush it.

After many hours, her hair was transformed and so was her spirit. The staff at Capri Waterloo says they wanted to do everything they could for a client who they say walked in saying she was depressed and worthless. The salon says the young woman was pleading for her hair to be fixed in time for her school pictures Tuesday night.

The girl told her hair dresser she had been depressed, and hadn't left her bed.

"Since the beginning of the 2017 summer she had just been laying in bed all the time and she only got up to go to the bathroom," said Kayley Olsson, Capri Waterloo student. "She says she didn't realize it was getting as bad as it was because she was just putting it up in a pony tail and clipping it in and she was like, 'I just got to the point where I didn't care anymore'."

Olsson says when the 16-year-old girl walked into the salon Monday she asked for the stylists to cut it off.

"She said, 'just cut it' she was like 'I feel worthless, this is even worthless to try to get through she's just like, 'I am in so much pain' and I told her, 'we are going to try and save as much hair as possible for you'," said Olsson.

Olsson and fellow student Mariah Wenger say they worked for two days to save the girl's hair.

"After being here for five hours we got the last knot out of her hair and I just looked at her and I was like, 'guess what? It's out' and she just bawled, we all bawled, but it was nothing but happy tears and I am just so glad we could do that for her," said Olsson.

The stylists say the young woman came into the salon sad and feeling worthless, but after a few tools, support and love, her hair and her spirit were transformed.

"She told me that she'll actually smile for her school pictures today and that I made her feel like herself again so it was eye opening and I am so glad we could do that for her," said Olsson.

The salon says they are giving the young woman a gift card to come back every month to get her hair done. This is something Capri Waterloo is hoping will continue to make her feel beautiful and worth it.

Olsson posted the transformation pictures to her Facebook page Tuesday night. Since then the post has been shared more than 60 thousand times.

Olsson says since the young woman left the salon Tuesday she has been in contact with her. She says the young girl says those shares have made her feel that she is not alone.
