New Waterloo bike lanes excite cycling community

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

New bicycle lanes in Waterloo are exciting some, but confusing others. Getting used to the new bike lanes can be tricky, but they are something the cycling community is very excited for. While others say they are going to cause accidents.

"I talk to an awful amount of people who say they won't ride the city streets," said Gregory Young, Waterloo Bicycle Works Owner. "Like I said this is a good first step helping them be comfortable using their bicycles in the streets...they have to know that they are going to be safe doing this."

Like any change, Young says it takes some getting used to.

"This is something new so people need a little bit of education on this," said Young. "People in cars and cyclists both need to have a clear understanding about how these lanes are supposed to work and once everybody gets it it will be good."

Though the new bike lanes may be confusing to some Young says he doesn't see any downfalls to this change.

"I think it's too soon to tell. but I only assume there is going to be good things coming from this, so I hope to see it expand in the future," said Young. "Once people get used to this and see that it's practical and doable then hopefully they will spread out through the City of Waterloo and spread to other parts of the city."

Not everyone in town are welcoming the new lanes.

"I think it's confusing and ridiculous," said Russell Gaede. "I think a bicycle could get clipped off, sometime these corners the way you come to them, you're not sure where you're supposed to be in the lane or parking and it looks like someone could get hurt from them."

Young say it's important just to slow down and watch your surroundings, whether you're on a bike or in a car.

Next weekend Waterloo Bicycle Works will be helping demonstrate how to use the lanes for both drivers and cyclists. The city is holding several demonstrations for the public, below are the dates, times and locations of those demonstrations.
