Florida fire dept. recruits kicked out after putting noose on black recruit's desk

Posted: Updated:

Four young men, who were hoping to become firefighters, have to now think of a new line of work. The four were kicked out of a recruitment program in Florida for a racist prank.

An African American recruit in class found a noose hanging over his chair at the fire station.

Those who did it, called it a joke.

The fire chief says, there's nothing funny about it.

"That noose, I don't care what you call it, fishing knot or whatever. It is a noose. It represents hatred. It represents death to African-Americans and we won't tolerate that here," Chief John Jurgle said with the Pompano Beach Fire Department.

Chief Jurgle says he knows which recruit tied the knot, but says three others in the group knew it happened, and wouldn't admit what took place.

As a result, all four are no longer recruits.
