Cedar Falls Schools' construction projects underway

Posted: Updated:

The 2017-2018 school year is getting closer, and one school district is getting ready with millions of dollars in renovations and construction.

Right now, the Cedar Falls School District has three main projects underway by revamping North Cedar School and Orchard Hill Elementary, and crews are building the new Aldrich Elementary.

All projects are starting to take shape, and it's a sign of growth in the community.

There are 12 days of summer left, but North Cedar, Orchard Hill, and the new Aldrich Elementary campuses are buzzing with construction crews.

Cedar Falls Superintendent of Schools, Andy Pattee, said that watching the $40 million project come together isn't only rewarding for him, but it's also rewarding for teachers, students and parents.

"They are extremely excited as well. We've had a lot of comments from people as we look at the future, and what we're able to provide educationally for our students," Pattee said.

Pattee says that retrofitting North Cedar and Orchard Hill while building the new school will finally give students the environment where they deserve to learn.

"Knowing that as enrollment continues to grow as we focus on excellence in education. Having our students in facilities that are actually focused on educational excellence and not in trailers, not in over-crowded classrooms, it's going to be so exciting and rewarding," Pattee said.

The new Aldrich Elementary School project will help with over-crowded classrooms, but it also addresses Cedar Falls' growth.

The best way to see that is across the street from the project, and you can see all sorts of new homes being built.

"The new home growth and families that are coming and moving into Cedar Falls, and the expansion of our schools, it's just an exciting time for people across our community," Pattee said.

Construction at the new school wraps up Fall of 2018.

Additions to the other schools should be done by December of 2018.

According to Superintendent Pattee, all schools in the district will have reduced classrooms when the new school opens, but Southdale and Lincoln schools will see the biggest relief.
