North Korea threatens to strike Guam

Posted: Updated:

Tensions are mounting between North Korea and the United States.  North Korea now says it is "examining the operational plan" for attacking Guam to contain U.S. bases located there.  Andersen Air Force Base is in Guam.

The threat, coming from state-run news agency KCNA, comes just hours following President Trump declaring North Korea would "face fire and fury like the world has never seen," if they continued threats toward the U.S.

"North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States," the President said.

In a statement early Wednesday, KCNA says the North Korean army is studying a plan to create an “enveloping fire” in areas around Guam with medium- to long-range ballistic missiles.  The exact strength of the North Korean missiles is being assessed by both the U.S. and Japan.  In an annual report Tuesday, Japan’s Defense Ministry said “it is possible that North Korea has achieved the miniaturization of nuclear weapons and has developed nuclear warheads.”

Guam is an unincorporated U.S. territory.  The island is home to about 160,000 people, including thousands of American service members and their families.
