Man arrested after raid to Iowa City recording studio

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

An Iowa City man has been arrested after police raided his recording studio and found stolen items.

Police arrested Quentin Johnson, 34, of Iowa City, on Friday, August 5. Criminal complaints state that on June 16, a search warrant was executed at his business. Inside, police found a stolen MacBook laptop and Nikon camera. Police said that Johnson asked for the stolen items back because he needed them for his recording business.

Johnson had been renting out unit 12 inside the Hall Mall, located in downtown Iowa City. The Hall Mall is described as Iowa City's original business incubator -- where spaces are rented out to help start up businesses.

The property manager said there had been prior problems with Johnson as a tenant and a notice of eviction was given prior to the raid. He said Johnson violated a number of the lease conditions, such as leaving the main door of the mall unlocked after hours and having large groups of people hanging out inside in the unit and hallways after-hours until the early morning.

He said police had been called in the past because of burning odors that could be smelled coming from the unit. The unit was also left trashed, with spray paint on the walls and carpets.

Johnson faces charges of third-degree theft. Police also charged him on Friday for a controlled substance violation, accused of selling nearly 30 grams of marijuana to a confidential informant.
