New research finds pets don't improve health of kids

Posted: Updated:

Contrary to popular belief, a new study shows having a pet doesn't improve the mental or physical health of children.

That's according to the RAND Corporation. Researchers looked at thousands of households with, and without, pets. They found children from pet-owning families did have better overall health.

After taking 100 other factors into consideration, like income, housing, and language skills, those health advantages disappeared.

Experts say future research could look at the longer-term effects of pet ownership.
