29th baby turned over in Iowa's safe haven law

Posted: Updated:

Iowa Department of Human Services officials say the state's safe haven procedure has been used for the 29th time.

A boy was born July 25, 2017, at an Iowa hospital and was released to the custody of the DHS.

A court hearing to terminate parental rights is held within a month.

The law was approved following a 2001 case in which a teenage mother in eastern Iowa killed her home-delivered newborn.

The law lets parents hand over custody of babies up to 14 days old without fear of prosecution.
