CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Cedar Rapids police officers are helping kids prepare to go back to school by paying for their supplies.

The department expects to buy for 107 kids today at the Target on Blairs Ferry Road.

Area organizations helped identify kids who may be in need of supplies.

Janiyah Holloway is going into 1st grade, she spent part of her afternoon getting everything she needs alongside Lt. Cory McGarvey.

"It's very positive were trying to build that trust and continue to add to the trust that we already have with the community, it's very meaningful," says Lt. McGarvey.

The shopping trip helps parents out as well.

"As a single mom of four this is perfect. It's very helpful it saves me a ton of money," says Dominique Forest,  Janiyah's mother.

Leftover money in the budget goes towards needed shoes and clothing.

Everything is paid for through the Cedar Rapids Police Protective Charity which is funded through community donations and the police officers themselves.
