Steve Carignan announces his candidacy for Waterloo City Council's Ward 5 seat today at an event for supporters and friends.

Carignan is executive director of the Gallagher Bluedorn at the University of Northern Iowa and a 14-year resident of Waterloo.

"I've worked at the intersecting of public service and the market place for my entire career, now I want to put my experience to work for Waterloo, improving services to Waterloo's citizens through innovation and productivity by the team of the mayor, council members and city staff," said Carignan.

Carignan has three areas of focus for his candidacy, including improving team-work among the mayor, council and city staff, public safety enhancements, and economic development.

"Waterloo needs a city council that will put the needs for our citizens above partisanship and I believe I can help with that," said Carignan. "Once that's in place, we can work toward improving public safety, which will benefit out image and community self-esteem, at the same time working on growth and wise investment to provide economic mobility for our citizens and the services our community deserves."

Carignan has been at the Gallagher Bluedorn for 18 yeas, and serves as associate dean for outreach and special programs. He oversees all operations and events at the center of all campus ticketing operations with a staff of 15 full-time and 120 student employees and 220 volunteers.
