Level of intensity about to rise for Panthers

Posted: Updated:

Two-a day practices are gone, but the level of intensity is about to ramp up for the 2017 edition of the UNI Panther football team.

The Panthers have seven new assistant coaches this season, and head coach Mark Farley says his team will find its course.

Farley says, "We have a lot of youth, speed and depth."

22 starters return for the Panthers, who open the season again this year at Iowa State on September 2.

UNI beat the Cyclones, 25-20, last year in the season opener, but finished a disappointing 5-6 overall.

All-American Karter Schult is gone, but UNI returns nine starters on defense and eight on offense, including starting quarterback., Eli Dunne.

Dunne got his first start half way through 2016 season and looks to use that experience to lead the Panthers to the top of the Missouri Valley Conference.

In pre-season polling, UNI is picked to finish 4th in the MVC.

Coach Farley admits his Panthers have a very challenging schedule, including six games on the road.

After Iowa State at Jack Trice Stadium, the Panthers get a home game in the UNI Dome September 9 against Cal Poly.
