Divine Word College Tuesday announced its 9th President.

Rev. Tom Ascheman, SVD, has returned to his alma mater to become the ninth president of Divine Word College (DWC), Epworth.

For the past six years, Ascheman has been the provincial superior of the Society of the Divine Word Chicago Province, which spans much of North America. Selected by the DWC Board of Trustees, his appointment became effective on June 1. A formal inauguration is set for Friday, Oct. 6, at Divine Word College.

“The constitutions of the Society of the Divine Word urge us to, ‘…make the goodness and kindness of God visible in our life and service.’” Ascheman said. “Divine Word College helped prepare me for a lifetime of missionary outreach, and I am very glad for the chance to help prepare a new generation of missionaries in the same tradition.”

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota and growing up in Des Moines, Ascheman graduated from Divine Word College in 1976.

His career spanned parish work near Mexico City and Fort Wayne, Indiana to service at the highest levels of the worldwide missionary order in Rome, as mission secretary. Along the way, after being ordained in 1982, he taught at DWC and later Mexico City and earned his Ph.D. in Religion and Culture from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

Ascheman succeeds Rev. Timothy Lenchak, SVD, who served two terms as president of DWC and is now the novice director at the SVD Chicago Province headquarters, at Techny, Illinois.

Based in Epworth, Iowa, Divine Word College is a Roman Catholic seminary in the tradition of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), which educates men and women for missionary service as priests, brothers, sisters and laypersons.

For this purpose, it offers an education that combines spiritual formation, a liberal arts curriculum, language learning and mission preparation within an environment that teaches and honors the rich cultural diversity of the world.
