Last-minute wedding after venue floods in Fairbank

Posted: Updated:

Some people believe rain on your wedding day is good luck.

But an eastern Iowa couple dealt with so much rain, their wedding was thrown for a loop.

For this Fairbank couple, their wedding almost didn't happen.

Rod and Christine Clay were supposed to get married in Fairbank last Saturday.

They set up all their decorations for the reception at Costa's Bar and Grill. But major flooding in Fairbank meant they had to move all their decorations down the street to the Fairbank American Legion.

By early afternoon, the couple realized flooding was so bad, few people were being allowed in-town.

They almost had to cancel their wedding, but the Waterloo Center for the Arts opened their doors last minute.

The couple changed plans, and in the end, still managed to get married at 5 in the evening.

Rod Clay's son is an event planner in Des Moines, so he helped out a lot with the last-minute planning..

Still, the couple says it wouldn't have been possible without their friends and strangers in the community who pitched in to help.

Around a hundred people were still able to make it out to the new wedding venue for their big day.

The couple also just got back from a much needed honeymoon.
