Last day for JCPenney after 95 years in Decorah

Posted: Updated:

After a long fight to keep a department store open, JCPenney is closing its doors for good tonight after 95 years in Decorah.

For the last time today, JCPenney was filled with shoppers. Tomorrow, it will be added to the growing list of department stores closed all across the country as online shopping continues to take over. It's disappointing news for many local shoppers.

Shopper James Thorne says, "I like to go into a store and try on different things and make sure they fit. A lot of people like to see how it looks before you buy it, they can't offer you that on the internet."

People were going through the last deals for just a couple of bucks.

"It's a sad day. I loved shopping at JCPenney," says Bonnie Brandenburg.

It goes beyond that though, Decorah is losing a staple to its beautiful downtown area.

Kristina Wiltgen of the Chamber of Commerce says, "JCPenney was a good fit here regarding price point and the variety of things they sold for whole family."

It's also a place that holds many memories for someone like Rachel Murany who grew up here but moved away.

"I used to shop here when I was a little girl. I remember going up the stairs and buying patterns to sew my own clothes," she says.

She is in town visiting her 104-year-old mother this week and saying goodbye to JCPenney, proving it was more than just a store for so many people the last 95 years.

She says, "I had to go in today to relive the memories and see the building. It holds a lot of nostalgia for me and the entire town of Decorah."

There are a still open locations in Iowa with the closest ones in Cedar Rapids, Marshalltown, and Ames.
