Storm causes damage to Bahl Family Farm, hoping to rebuild

Posted: Updated:

Kathy Bahl and her son Joseph stand back and look at the damage on the family farm.

Earlier this month, the nearly 100-year-old barn was ravaged by a wind storm in Dubuque County.  "There had been just like a wall of gray between the barn and the house," Kathy said. "You could see that the barn was gone."

Thankfully, no one was hurt, including the calves and goats.

Every year during the holiday season, people go to the farm to pick out their Christmas trees.

Joseph helps with the process. "I was incomplete shock, sadness took over right away I guess," he said. "There was a lot of memories in this barn, from the (pumpkin) festival to the Christmas tree, just a lot of memories with dad in there."

His dad Doug died six years ago and ever since there has been a series of difficult events. Last year, the other barn on the farm was destroyed by a fire.

The family remains positive and wants to rebuild a new barn.

However,  they can't say if this will affect them this holiday season. "I guess I'm not quite sure, because our Christmas tree operation was always in this barn. I haven't really thought about how would we operate it under this situation," Kathy said.

The Bahls' say they plan on incorporating some of the history of the old barn into the new one, including the beams and wood.

The salvage effort is taking time and money.

They have created a gofundme campaign. If you're interested in helping, visit:
