CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Helping one of their own, but also needing your help.

An eastern Iowa police department is coming together to raise money, after learning one of their own officers has been  diagnosed with cancer.

Cedar Falls Reserve Officer Scott Sterrett was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

Sterrett 48 years old, and an avid runner. He's already done 23 marathons, including the Boston Marathon. Now, he's in the battle of his life.

Officers with the Cedar Falls Police Department say they were shocked when they heard the news.

They've decided to help out their fellow coworkers and friend who's already done so much for the community.

"Very compassionate, helpful guy. He's one of those unsung heroes that really puts himself out there for other people. He never asks for anything in return. This is our opportunity to repay the things that he's done for everybody else, and show him our appreciation for all his hard work," Lt. Martin Beckner says.

The police department is planning a special 5K for him that starts at Gateway Park in Cedar Falls. The 5K will be Thursday August 17th at 6:30 p.m.

It's called the Officer Needs Assistance 5K. There will be a barbeque after the run.  All runners and walkers are invited to participate, but please register ahead of time.

The Cedar Falls Police Department asks that anyone who is interested please pre-register, so they know how much food will be needed.

If you would like to help out, but don't want to run, you can just come out for the food afterward.

If you would like to register for the 5K, click here: https://www.athlinks.com/event/210111

If you would like to donate, click here. If you would like to come out just for the food, you can message the Cedar Falls Police Operations Facebook page

The Cedar Falls Police Department also thanks Dave Lipinski at Trekman racing for his donation and time spent organizing this event. They also thank Here's What's Poppin. They will be hand-selling popcorn at the 5K. All the proceeds will be donated to Scott.

If you are interested in being a food vendor, or want to help out in any other way, you can contact Officer Zolondek at the Cedar Falls Police Department.

Scott Sterrett is one of the longest serving reserve officers at Cedar Falls.
