WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A family was pushed from their home this weekend after a fire sparked in their kitchen. Waterloo firefighters responded to a house fire just after 7:00 yesterday morning at the corner of Glenwood and Mohawk Streets.

Neighbors say a man, his girlfriend and their child live in the home. Everyone got out okay, but it was a scary morning for the family and for people who live on the block.

"From what I could see outside it looked like at least the rear end of the house was fully involved," said Randy Fox, neighbor.

Fox says the man who lives in the home was asking for his help yesterday after his home caught fire.

"I got a knock on the door about 7:00 a.m., my neighbor said he wanted some water and I was about to get him a glass of water till I realized I could smell smoke and I saw smoke coming from the house," said Fox.

Neighbors say the man tried to put the fire out himself.

"He grabbed the neighbors water hose and tried to go back into the house and I advised him against it because there was dark brown and black smoke coming from the house," said Fox. "I knew he wouldn't be able to take that and I knew there was nothing that he could do with the garden hose, I just kept encouraging him to stay out."

Firefighters say the fire started in the kitchen and neighbors say the man who lives in the home was asleep when he smelled smoke.

"He said he was sleeping on the couch and his girlfriend was about to cook something," said Fox. "I can only surmise she put something on the stove and left the house with him sleeping on the sofa and he woke up to smoke alarms going off."

Neighbors say the main reason the man wanted to go back into the house was to find his cat. At last check we don't know if the cat made it out. Firefighters say there was a lot of damage to the home and the American Red Cross is helping the family.
