RAGBRAI cyclists stop in Cresco

CRESCO (KWWL) -

Iowa's greatest summer tradition on two wheels is rolling along this week.

This year's edition of RAGBRAI is now in the home stretch with riders off the seat after the fifth day.

On Thursday, the cyclists pushed off from Charles City to start the day, and peddled through Ionia, New Hampton, Lawler, and Protivin, before finishing up in Cresco.

The big news Thursday, famous cyclist Lance Armstrong and NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson joined RAGBRAI.

People are saying RAGBRAI is all about the experience, and it's not just biking across the state.

A pop-up concert of middle school students came from nowhere in Ionia, as RAGBRAI cyclists stopped from Charles City on Thursday.

Ryan Ruschoff of Bloomington, Minnesota explained that feeling, "this is what RAGBRAI is all about. Just running into awesome things like this in small towns."

Cedar Falls native, Mary Funk, and her team say it's truly a week-long experience.

"You can't really describe it really. RAGBRAI is just a thing you experience. It's an interesting kind of vibe I suppose. It's fun, it's great," Mary said.

Cyclists traveled more than 50 miles and climbed nearly 2,250 feet, and despite all the fun along the way, cyclists say they're starting to notice those inclines.

"A little bit, yeah. There are a few rollers," Mary said.

"It was a little wake-up call this morning riding into the first town here.  It's only going to get worse. So we've got to hang in there," Ross Meany of Iowa City said.

We'll continue to follow RAGBRAI throughout the weekend.
